Ronan

By the time Ciarán and I got done it was too late to surprise Renee. I really want to make amends with her. She’s a good person with a kind heart. After her husband died in a boating accident, it took a long time for her to love and trust anyone. When I say this out loud, it sounds absolutely horrible, but it was when I was counseling her through her grief that we hooked up. Looking back on it now, I’m just a dirty bastard who knew what was happening and let it. I’ll admit it to myself that I have feelings for her, but not the ones she is looking for. Still, I think I’ll see if she wants to meet for lunch. That will give me plenty of time to go see my mum this morning while I figure out some sort of apology for Renee. I quickly call her, but it goes directly to voice mail. “Hey, I was wondering if you would like to meet me for lunch today. There’s a new cafe along the coast that I’ve wanted to try. I can swing by and pick you up around noon. Let me know.” I hate voice mail, but I have no choice. I grab my keys and head out to see my mum, the only difference today is that I’m wearing my collar.

I made sure I got here after her breakfast. I know she has all different activities available to her if she wants to do them. I spoke to the charge nurse and told her what I planned on doing. Her sympathetic smile made me realize she must hear this from families all the time. I knock on her door and then step inside. I watch her as she swipes her lipstick across her lips. She reminds me of Eevee so much. I clear my throat and make myself known. When she sees me, she smiles. As she takes a few steps towards me, I find my heart is literally in my throat, like that’s even possible. Maybe today will be a good day. Maybe today will be the day she will know who I am. She extends her hand out towards me and I feel my heart begin to sink.

“Hello, young man, my name is Mary, Mary O’Hanlon. Is it Sunday already? Are we having mass today? I love the church music. I think I used to sing at church but I’m not sure about that.”

I slip my arm in hers as we head towards the atrium. She seems less agitated when she’s out there. “Mary, I have a story to tell you. If it upsets you, then please tell me to stop.” There is an area that has beautiful orchids surrounding a bench, I take her there and we have a seat. She smiles as she looks around at the beautiful flowers.

“You have to forgive me; sometimes I forget so easily. What’s your name again?”

“My name is Ronan, Ronan O’Hanlon.” I say the words out loud, thinking I would give her time to let them sink in.
